When my wonderful daughter was born, it changed my career path. The idea of sitting for my CPA exam while trying to be a full-time mom? It gave me anxiety. But I knew tax and accounting was the field for me, and Intuit, the global financial technology platform behind TurboTax, QuickBooks, Credit Karma, and Mailchimp, provided the emotional and financial support I needed to complete my enrolled agent credential.
That was just the start. My work with Intuit keeps me challenged, engaged, and working with some of the best people in the industry. The icing on the cake is the ability to be with my daughter when she needs me most.
Flexibility to support the life I wanted to create
I love what I do in the tax & bookkeeping field. But my first priority? Family, of course. That’s why I’m so grateful for the opportunity to work at Intuit. This is a place where I can personalize my career path so I have time for my loved ones but still get the satisfaction of interacting with customers on my own schedule. I work 20 hours a week, all year round, with health benefits.
You just can’t beat the flexibility that Intuit offers. I start as early as 5:00 a.m., and the company is totally OK with that. Having the ability to set my own hours lets me modify my schedule so that I can be completely available for my daughter when she gets home from school.
When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, I had to homeschool my daughter, a kindergartner at the time, and put on my teaching hat. My manager was so awesome about it. He said, “We can change your hours; just tell me what’s going to work for you.”
I personally know many other moms who didn’t receive anything close to the kind of support I did from Intuit. Even now, if my daughter has a doctor appointment, or if a life event comes up, our leads are so supportive and accommodating. They never make you feel bad about putting your family first.
If I want to bring in additional income—if I set a goal to buy a new car, take a vacation, whatever—I can schedule more hours for myself, especially during tax season. There’s no pressure at all to take on those hours, but I love having the option, and it’s really helped my family.
Whether you choose to work full time, seasonally, or year-round like me, you’ll have so many career paths in front of you.
No one’s born a tax expert
I’m home with my daughter, but I have great virtual team support. Even though my colleagues live in other states, we’re always bouncing ideas off each other, asking, “Have you been seeing this problem today? Can you tell us about it? What’s the solution?” We come from all different backgrounds—attorneys, CPAs, EAs, among others—and we collaborate so well.
Before coming to Intuit, my background was mainly in bookkeeping. I had limited tax experience doing some 1040s and nonprofit returns. But with Intuit’s training (and my helpful colleagues) I learned a lot about taxes quickly. It didn’t take long to realize I could thrive as a tax professional.
Some of our tax and bookkeeping experts are able to support multiple Intuit products. I work on TurboTax and QuickBooks, which means I’m helping individuals and small businesses with all kinds of tax and accounting challenges.
If you’re just starting your professional journey, looking to wind it down, or somewhere in between, you can use your expertise while personalizing your own tax & bookkeeping career.
